What We Do
Mentoring
Our primary mission is to work with elementary school students in higher need areas to make writing fun by helping them develop their own school newspaper.
Workshops
We give free writing workshops to students at local Title I schools. Each of our Title I school programs work on a Fall and Spring newspaper. We also hold one-day workshop events that result in a newspaper. At the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium, we hold CMA Kids News workshops, and at the University of Southern California, we hold an annual USC Kids News workshop.
Summer Programs
Student volunteers can participate in our extensive summer program schedule. During the summer we have 60 volunteer opportunities. We hold summer programs that including a writing exercise at the Boys & Girls Club of Port of LA, Wilmington Boys & Girls Club, San Pedro Boys & Girls Club, and Richstone Family Center. These programs are designed and run by PressFriends high school student board members and include: TheatreFriends, ArtFriends, STEMFriends, SportsFriends, DanceFriends, MusicFriends, EcoFriends, BookFriends, MUNFriends, SewingFriends, EditFriends, and CraftFriends.
Special Events
We take our school and community programs to the USC Kids News workshops and take our school programs to our Annual Conference for Elementary Student Newspapers. Our student volunteers mentors also attend both events.

How We Do It
Students
We are students in the Los Angeles area. We were started by the former editors of one of the few student-run elementary school newspapers in Los Angeles County.
Advisors
We are supervised by parent volunteers and volunteer educators, and each school mentoring is overseen by either teachers or afterschool staff. Mentorings at other institutions are overseen by staff at those institutions, as well as PressFriends parents.
